【简  介】For the last twenty-thousand years, dogs and people have shared a unique bond in the animal kingdom. In How Our Love of Dogs Creates Social Conflict, James K. Beggan uses symbolic interaction to examine the meaning that dogs have for people as friends and family members. Although many animal rights advocates express dismay over the subordinate status ownership implies, the author argues that ownership creates a powerful psychological connection that makes it easier for people to imbue dogs with humanlike characteristics.

Beggan outlines how dogs’ sensitivity to inequity, in combination with a high degree of cognitive capacity, makes it possible for dogs to be active agents in creating conflict between people. The author's analysis of social conflict between people over their dogs connects to profound philosophical concepts about the nature of mind, the relationship between humans and animals, and the moral responsibility human beings have to dogs and other animals.

【简  介】In April of 1922, Albert Einstein and Henri Bergson famously disagreed in a debate on the nature of time. With the benefit of hindsight, the source of this conflict appears to be a dichotomy between the geometric views of time considered by Einstein and the subjective experience of it as duration adopted by Bergson. Is Bergson’s experienced duration identical with Einstein’s geometric time, or are they two separate entities that are merely correlated during life? If we assume the latter, how do we enquire into the nature of this relationship?

Relying on current research into the nature of space-time, this book posits that the physical world evolves in a predictable (unitary) way at the quantum level, and that this remains the case even under the extreme conditions of maximal gravitational collapse. Moreover, it appears that closed timelike curves are not admitted without the existence of exotic matter, which would otherwise compromise predictability. Turning to the philosophy of mind and psychical research, the book also examines the possibility that the relationship between experienced duration and geometric time can be modified.

【简  介】While rituals surrounding death may vary by geography, culture, and time, experiencing the loss of a loved one is a universal experience. Death has become a focal point during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, forcing many to unexpectedly confront the profound and enduring reality of loss. Understanding death from a multidisciplinary approach, Facing Death compiles contributions from across fields, methodologies, locations, cultures, and circumstances.

Facing Death explores beyond loss solely on an individual level, considering instead helpful or harmful emotional reactions from others. Delving into how older adults who experience loss may find themselves without a support system, while those at a young age might find that their peers do not understand or know how to support them in their bereavement, the authors also consider how causes of death can also affect grieving loved ones on a personal and societal level. For example, how might death by suicide complicate the grieving process as family and friends not only have to contend with the loss itself, but also the associated stigmas and judgements surrounding suicide? How might individuals experience fear and anxiety about death during a prolonged illness?

Exploring responses to familial illness and death, this edited collection is a detailed investigation of the subject for any scholar interested in discussions and decisions surrounding end of life care and the grief trajectory after loss.

【简  介】This book takes an entertaining peek at the secrets and scandals of Regency Britain, a period in which the heir to the throne was making merry with his mistress while his ailing father attempted to keep a grip on both his crown and his finances. From Princess Caraboo to the Peterloo Massacre, the Regency was a period of immense upheaval in both personal and public lives as well as in politics. We’ll see how the advent of the modern media brought ‘spin’ to scandal and focus on stories of those people and events who encapsulated the age.

【简  介】Many African countries including Tanzania are signatory to several international treaties and covenants, for instance, the United Nations covenants on civil together with political issues, which it approved in 1976. By signing as well as approving such international treaties, several governments of Africa acknowledge that they have an obligation to abide, defend, observe, fulfill as well as to facilitate the rights in those tools. In the context of Tanzania, right to express own opinion in Tanzania is a Constitutional and fundamental right. After all, free speech is a fundamental value of any democratic community deserving the highest legal protection. However, despite the claims about the human rights in the democratic society, freedom of expression in many African countries including Tanzanian seems not to provide the outcomes of its implementations. In fact, this book is one of the few works on Freedom of Expression of the 21st century which demands a more than professional audience. The book offers vivid examples of obstacles in practices of freedom of expression in Tanzania.

【简  介】Violence, Trauma, and Memory: Responses to War in the Late Medieval and Early Modern World brings together eight essays that examine medieval and early modern violence and warfare in France, the Hispanic World, and the Dutch Republic through the lens of trauma studies and memory studies. By focusing on warfare, these essays by historians, literary specialists, and historians of visual culture demonstrate how individuals and groups living with the “ungraspable” outcomes of wartime violence grappled with processing and remembering (both culturally and politically) the trauma of war.

The Haunted States of America: Gothic Regionalism in Post-war American Fiction

【简  介】The Haunted States of America reveals how the red scare exploited regional narrative traditions as it spread across the national imagination. In particular, Cold War anxieties found a welcome home in regional forms of Gothic fiction that already mediated anxieties about threats to local power structures: white supremacy, patriarchy, and colonialism, as well as capitalism. James Morgart argues that postwar Gothic fiction in the United States should be understood through these local anxieties and narratives first, before reading for national resonances. Through a series of localized readings—in the South, the Midwest, New England, New York, and California—Morgart reveals more than a century of regionalized angst behind the twentieth-century American Gothic.

School Gun Violence in YA Literature: Representing Environments, Motives, and Impacts

【简  介】Since Columbine, the topic of school shootings has become ever more prevalent in the media, in research, and in fiction. This book provides analyses of several Young Adult (YA) texts about school shootings and uncovers how the authors represent such violence (and those who perpetrate it) while developing stories that effectively speak to their adolescent readers. Employing Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory, Laura A. Brown examines how the texts frame particular settings and events as important to the development of young people as a way of accounting for the shootings. Likewise, psychologist Peter Langman’s classification of the three populations of school shooters is utilized as a framework to analyze the characterization of fictional shooters in the texts. The author argues that these texts, while not easy to read, are important, as they problematize the ways we think about, approach, and react to school shootings and the students who commit such acts.

Aquaman and the War against Oceans: Comics Activism and Allegory in the Anthropocene

【简  介】The reimagining of Aquaman in The New 52 transformed the character from a joke to an important figure of ecological justice. In Aquaman and the War against Oceans, Ryan Poll argues that in this twenty-first-century iteration, Aquaman becomes an accessible figure for charting environmental violences endemic to global capitalism and for developing a progressive and popular ecological imagination.

Poll contends that The New 52 Aquaman should be read as an allegory that responds to the crises of the Anthropocene, in which the oceans have become sites of warfare and mass death. The Aquaman series, which works to bridge the terrestrial and watery worlds, can be understood as a form of comics activism by its visualizing and verbalizing how the oceans are beyond the projects of the “human” and “humanism” and, simultaneously, are all-too-human geographies that are inextricable from the violent structures of capitalism, white supremacy, and patriarchy. The New 52 Aquaman, Poll demonstrates, proves an important form of ocean literacy in particular and ecological literacy more generally.

Abortion in Popular Culture: A Call to Action

【作  者】Brenda Boudreau, Kelli Maloy

【出版社】Lexington Books (March 30, 2023)

【简  介】Abortion in Popular Culture: A Call to Action brings together scholars who examine depictions of abortion in film, television, literature, and social media. By examining texts ranging from classic television series such as Maude and Roseanne and recent films such as Never Rarely Sometimes Always and Unpregnant to dystopian novels and social-media campaigns, the essays analyze narrative styles, rhetorical strategies, and cinematic techniques, all of which shape cultural attitudes toward abortion. They also analyze cultural shifts, including the willingness or reluctance of networks, cable channels, and filmmakers to acknowledge changing trends in reproductive health such as medication abortion and the role that abortion plays in family planning. As a whole, however, the essays argue that popular culture can play a significant role in destigmatizing abortion by including a wider range of narratives and doing so with nuance and empathy. With reproductive rights under attack in the United States, each essay is a call to action for writers, producers, directors, showrunners, authors, and musicians to use their platforms to tell more positive and accurate stories about abortion.
